Berkeley, Alameda County
In the fall of 1964 students at Berkeley protested a ban on political activity at the edge of campus, and the Free Speech Movement was born on Sproul Plaza. Mario Savio became its most recognized voice. The steps of Sproul Hall where he spoke now carry his name, and the plaza remains a place for tables, flyers and speeches.
